Work Permit Multiple - Entry Work Permit 
 
 

Outlined below is general information about the process of obtaining a Work Permit:  

Work Permit - This is a permit related to a specific person and a specific job and it allows UK employers to recruit or transfer people from outside the European Economic Area (EEA), while still protecting the interests of resident UK workers. In addition, work permits allow overseas nationals to enter the UK for training or work experience. Work Permits (UK) issues work permits as part of the Immigration and Nationality Directorate.

WORK PERMIT REQUIREMENTS

  • It should be realised that not all work requires a work permit. Permit-free employment includes work as a Minister of religion, representatives of overseas newspapers, writers, composers and artists and representatives of overseas newspapers. All professional workers must have specific experience in their occupation and intend to work full-time in their occupation in the UK and not intend to take any employment and be able to support yourself without recourse to public funds.

  • Your employer in the UK applies for a work permit to Work Permits (UK) while you are residing in the country of which you are a national or where you legally live.

  • Applicant may need to be tested for tuberculosis if applying to stay in the UK for more than 6 months.

  • The applicant must be able to fulfil the work referred to in the work permit, not intend to take other employment, intend to leave the UK when the work permit expires and be able to financially support the applicant and the applicant's dependents, without drawing on public funds.

TYPES OF WORK PERMITS

1.  Business and Commercial Work Permit - This allows UK employers to recruit from outside  the EEA and fill a vacancy that has not been filled by a resident worker.

2. Sports people and Entertainers- This allows UK employers to employ established sportspeople, entertainers, cultural artists from outside the EEA.

3. Internships- This allows students from outside the EEA to to undertake an internship with an employer in the UK provided that they are studying first or higher degree courses.

4. Global Agreement on Trade in Services (GATS) - Employees of companies that are based outside the EEA are allowed to work in the UK on a serevice contract awarded to their employer by a UK based company.

5. Sectors Based Scheme (SBS) - This scheme is intended for workers from outside the EEA to take low-skilled work in the food manufacturing industry.

6. Training and Work Experience Scheme - This scheme allows people from outside the EEA to undertake work-based training for a professional or specialist qualification or work for a short period as an extra member of staff.

7. Multiple-Entry Work Permits - The MEWP is intended for employees travelling regularly for short periods of work permit employment with the same employer in the UK and is valid for 6 months - 2 years. Note that MEWP visa holders must support themselves and they cannot bring their partners or dependents on this visa.
