information about the process of applying to migrate or for permanent residence under the
skilled migration stream:
GENERAL SKILLED MIGRATION
There are 5 main categories of skilled visas (Applicant can apply in Australia or offshore):

Independent - Applicant meets
the basic requirements and does not have a sponsor.

Skill Matching - Applicant
seeks to be nominated by a State or Territory government or an employer.
|
| 3.
|
Designated Area Sponsor - Applicant has
a sponsor who is a relative that lives in a designated area.
|
| 4.
|
Australian Sponsored - Applicant has a
Sponsor who is related to the Applicant but the Sponsor lives outside the
designated area.
|
| 5.
|
Skilled Independent Regional (Provisional) visa - Applicant is sponsored by a State or Territory authority and is permiited a temporary stay of 3 years. The applicant must live in regional Australia or a low population growth metropolitan area.

Basic Requirements for General Skilled
Migration

Age - Applicant must be under 45 years of age.

English Language - Applicant must have
vocational English ability.

Qualifications - Applicant must have
post-secondary qualifications (University or Trade). Qualifications must be assessed by the relevant assessing authority.

Nominated Occupation - Applicant must
nominate an occupation which fits applicant's skills and qualifications.

Recent Work Experience - Applicant must
have been in paid employment for at least 1 - 2 years immediately prior to application.

Points Test - Applicant must meet the passmark for the General Skilled Migration points test.

Health and Character tests - Applicant must successfully complete a medical examination and meet character requirements.
EMPLOYER NOMINATION SCHEME
Employer Requirements

Employer must demonstrate that they have a
need for a paid employee, that the business is located in
Australia and that it is operated by the employer.

Employer must prove that the vacancy requires
the appointment of a 'highly-skilled person.

Employer must demonstrate that the
highly-skilled person is eligible for any mandatory licensing,
registration or professional body membership where required.

Employer must prove that the position is a
full time, fixed-term appointment of at least 3 years, with a
possibility of renewal.

Employer has a satisfactory training record.

Employer must demonstrate that the position
cannot be filled through the local market unless the position is
an occupation in demand.

The terms and conditions of employment must be
in accordance with Australian Industrial laws.
Nominee Requirements
-
Nominee must have skills relevant to the
nominated position.

Nominee must be a 'highly skilled person'.

Nominee can satisfy any mandatory licensing or
registration requirements.

The employment is still available.
-
Nominee is less than 45 years of age.

Nominee has vocational level English language
ability.

Nominee and all family members meet health and
character requirements.
DISTINGUISHED
TALENT
-
Applicant must demonstrate an internationally
recognised record of exceptional and outstanding achievement in
sport, the arts or research and academia.

Applicant is still prominent in the profession.

Applicant is considered an asset to the
Australian community.
-
Applicant must prove that there will be no
difficulty in obtaining employment or in becoming established
independently in Australia.

Applicant must be nominated by an eligible
Australian nominee that has a national reputation in the
Applicant's field of expertise.

Applicant must meet the mandatory health and
character requirements.
