Outlined below is general information about the process of acquiring Australian citizenship: 

AUSTRALIAN CITIZENSHIP ELIGIBILITY

  • Children born in Australia.

  • Children adopted from overseas.

  • Children born overseas to Australian citizen parents.

  • People who lived in Australia before 1949.

  • Permanent Residents

AUSTRALIAN CITIZENSHIP PROCESS

1.  Lodge Application for grant of citizenship (provide supporting documents)

2. Application will be assessed by the Department of Immigration and Multicultural Affairs (DIMA) and Applicant may be asked to attend an interview.

3. If Application is successful - DIMA invites Applicant to attend a Citizenship ceremony.

4. Applicant attends Citizenship ceremony and makes a pledge of commitment as a citizen of Australia.

5. Applicant receives Certificate of Citizenship.

AUSTRALIAN CITIZENSHIP RIGHTS

  • Right to vote in government elections.

  • Apply for an Australian passport.

  • Apply to serve in the Australian defence forces.

  • Apply for public office or stand for election as a Member of Parliament.

  • Apply for specific government jobs.

  • Right to register your child (under 25 years, born overseas) as an Australian citizen by descent.

AUSTRALIAN CITIZENSHIP RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Obey the laws.

  • Enrol on the electoral register and vote at all elections.

  • Serve on a jury, if required.

  • Defend Australia, if required.
